About

We are passionate about changing the future of recycling in the emerging markets.

The future of recycling can only be changed by alleviating the marginalisation, suffering, and large scale disadvantage of informal waste pickers and their communities.

We have designed a human-centered business model that illustrates shared value at its best; Go Eco incentivises marginalised waste pickers at the base of the stakeholders pyramid by offering premium prices and added benefits, to provide a continuous supply of valuable recyclables which in turn creates pathways out of poverty for them, while simultaneously creating a positive environmental impact. Go Eco then processes the recyclable material into valuable raw material and feeds it back into plastic manufacturers’ supply chain to enable them to achieve their circular economy goals, and benefit from raw material cost savings.

Vision

People have changed. The world has changed. If we got to a point where we need to drink water in plastic bottles, we surely have changed! Humans have now reached an increasing volume of 7.7 billions people on the planet. If each one of us drinks only one bottle a day, we are looking at 2.8 trillion bottles a year. Where are they? Where do they go? Why are developed countries working so hard to recycle plastic bottles that are being discarded, when the developing countries, which are greater in volume, have not yet realized what is happening to the planet, with the immense plastic problem we face.

Go Eco strives to be on the forefront of a plastic waste recycling in Africa, starting with Nigeria where over 2.5 million tons of plastic is generated annually, which is the highest in Africa. With population estimated to double by 2050 could mean more solid waste being disposed and more plastic for recycling. However, only 10% of plastic is currently being recycled while the rest 90% ends up on the streets, landfills, drainage systems, waterways and large bodies of water.

We believe that Nigeria can reach 40-50% of recycled plastic in major cities in the next 5 years with more recyclers participating in the market and the right socio-economic programs. Go Eco team works closely with communities, SMEs, corporates and local/federal government to push our #goeconow vision that will not only boost percentage of recycled plastic but will also create jobs, benefit the communities and improve Nigerian environment.

History of plastic bottles

Engineer Nathaniel Wyeth patented polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles in 1973. These were the first plastic bottles that were able to withstand the pressure of carbonated liquids. They were a much cheaper alternative to glass bottles.
